Miami City Ballet - Carmen

Miami City Ballet - Carmen at Dreyfoos Concert Hall

Why see Miami City Ballet - Carmen?

Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's Carmen

Due to overwhelming demand, this new vision of Carmen by the highly sought after Colombian-Belgian choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa returns to Miami City Ballet! The sultry streets of Seville come to life in Georges Bizet's iconic work, reimagined for a modern-day ballet audience with Ochoa taking influence from the Hollywood movie Molly's Game. One of the most recognizable operas in the canon, this sizzling tale of lust and betrayal runs the gamut from passionate romance to tragedy, belayed by Bizet's unforgettable score.

The story follows Carmen, a fiery, provocative gypsy woman at odds with the conventions of Spain in the early 18th century. Able to seduce men with her dulcet tones and feminine wiles, Carmen ensnares the heart of Don Jose, who drops everything, including his betrothed Micaela, to be with her. When Carmen tires of her latest conquest, she leaves him for the handsome bullfighter Escamillo, setting off harrowing and ultimately fatal events fuelled by jealousy, obsession, and murderous rage.
